Rabbits bred for Wool!

As we all know sheep are bred for wool as well as food, but did you know that rabbits are now bred for wool. Well the particular weird creature is the Angora rabbit. These are domestic rabbits native to Turkey, which have long hair. They are calm animals that need proper Angora rabbit care, especially when being shorn of their soft hair. The Angora rabbit lives for almost 5 – 7 years and weighs about 2 – 3.5 kilos.

It is believed that the French people introduced Angora rabbits to Europe. They were initially raised for their fur, which was used for making sweaters and other warm apparels. But, now there are many breeds of Angoras, which are raised as pets as well. Being gentle and friendly in nature, these rabbits are perfect as pets, even for children.
Among the recognized breeds, the English Angora rabbits are very popular as pets, with fur covering their whole bodies, except the nose and the front feet. These rabbits require regular care and grooming to prevent matting of hair. You have to brush their coat daily or at an interval of two to three days. Regular brushing removes the loose hair that can then be knitted.

So, if you have a garden that is not big enough for sheep then why not try this rabbit as a source of wool for your knitting projects.
